Learning Goals:

The e-Learning courses Radar Basics and SAR Basics  in the»SAR-Tutor« provide the understanding, necessary to interpret radar images as part of a blended learning scenario. Evaluation and analysis of radar images differ considerably from that of optical images.  The electromagnetic waves used by Synthetic Aperture Radar, SAR, are capable of capturing images in unfavorable conditions (night, fog) and displaying them in such a way that they can be interpreted. Part of the training of the radar image interpreter is the procedure to interpret these SAR images and to determine what deductions can be made from these interpretations.


Radar Basics and SAR Basics – E-Learning Course for Radar Image Interpreters Basic e-Learning for Radar Technology

The e-learning courses for Radar Basics and SAR  SAR-Tutor  were developed by the
Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) at the renowned Fraunhofer Institute in Germany for and the German Armed Forces (“Bundeswehr“).

The figure on the right shows a screenshot of the SAR-Tutor’s “Introduction to the Doppler Effect”. The learners get background knowledge from texts and graphics and by interaction with schematic explanatory content.

The »SAR-Tutor« uses a variety of multimedia and hypertext techniques to support the learning process. Interactive sketches and animations allow the interpreter to explore the information contained in the SAR images. The »SAR-Tutor« also includes an authoring environment to expand and adapt the contents.

Blended Learning

SAR-Tutor is part of a blended-learning scenario in the German armed forces. The e-learning system is Web-based, to allow students to study before and after their course. It blends well into blended learning around

Two e-Learning Courses

The SAR Tutor includes two online courses, one on radar basics and one on synthetic aperture radar technology. It is aligned to look like a manual, with e-learning modules, chapters and sections.

  • Radar Basics:  This e-learning course  includes six e-learning modules, covering the principles of radar and how to interpret radar images of airports, harbors or industrial facilities. It also includes valuable information on how to identify of specific types of industrial building objects in radar-based aerial images.

Constructivist didactic Design

The didactic design follows a constructivist teaching method where the students are encouraged to interact with the content by interactive elements to “build up” their knowledge. The students can experiment with the content to increase their motivation and eventually their learning efficiency.

Free Online Access for the Radar Expert Community

With  the two e-learning courses of the SAR-Tutor, the German armed forces are maintaining a high standard of image interpretation skills. New personnel can be quickly and flexible trained and the experienced image interpreters are continuously update their knowledge.

The cooperation of Fraunhofer and SkyRadar now allows to open this powerful learning tool to a much broader audience.

Students can learn with this system free of any charge. Depending on the general frameset of their learning approach, the course can be used for expert training in military or air traffic control contexts as well as for university based education. We also invite any interested radar amateur to participate in this course.
